One summer evening I was sitting by the open window, reading a good science storybook. (79)I was so interested in the story I was reading that I did not notice that it was getting dark. When I realized it was too dark for me to read easily, I put the book down and got up to turn on the light. Just then I heard someone crying, "Help! Help!" it seemed to come from the trees at the other end of the yard. (80)I looked out but it was now too dark to see anything clearly. Almost immediately I heard the cry again. It sounded like a child, but I could not imagine what anybody could be doing in our backyard, unless one of the neighborhood children had climbed a tree and had not been able to get down.

I decided that I should go out and have a look in the yard, just in case someone was in trouble. I turned on the light and found for myself a flashlight and a baseball bat in the room. I thought they might be useful. Armed with these, I went out into the yard. Once again I heard the cry and this time there was no doubt that it came from the trees at the far end of the yard. "Who's there?" I called out as I walked across the yard towards the trees. But there was no answer. With the help of my flashlight, I searched all over that end of the yard, including the branches of the tree. There was no sign of anybody or anything. I came to the conclusion that my imagination was playing tricks on me, probably because of the story I was reading about strange creatures on another planet.

Feeling rather foolish about hunting around in my own backyard with a baseball bat, I went back into the house and put the bat and the flashlight away. I had just sat down to read my book again when I was frightened by the cry of "Help! Help!" from right behind me. I dropped my book and jumped up. There, sitting on the table was a large green and red bird. It was my neighbor's parrot(鹦鹉)!While I was out in the yard, the parrot must have seen the light in the living room and come in through the open window.

One summer evening the author was reading by the open window because ______.

A.it was getting dark.

B.it was too dark for him to read easily outside.

C.he didn't mm on the light.

D.none of the above

I came to India a year ago to find a village in which I could live and write but it was ma
ny months be fore I settled down happily in this Himalayan community.

I wasted a lot of time looking for the ‘typical’ village. Yet no such thing exists. Conditions vary too widely. But the villages I stayed in had much in common——poverty, dirt, and ignorance. Often the villagers themselves were puzzled, suspicious. Why had I come? I had put aside my work as a political journalist because my ideas had changed. I had come to believe that what was happening in the Third World was more important than anything else. But to understand how three-quarters of the world' s people live, and how their future might affect ours, I felt that I first bad to try and share their Way of life.

In the end I chose a mountain village because it was a little cooler than those in the plains. I took the bus from town along a bumpy road. Then came a rough walk down a steep path to the river. After this I began to climb into the hills. Whenever I stopped to catch my breath, there was a magnificent view. After several hours' walk the village came into view.

After the writer had arrived in India ______.

A.he spent years writing about the place he lived in

B.he took quite a long time finding a suitable place to live

C.he spent years looking for a certain village

D.he lived in a Himalayan community for many months

Passage Two

I was only eight years old when the Second World War ended, but I can still remember something about the victory celebrations in the small town where I lived on the day when the war in Europe ended. We had not suffered much from the war there. But both at home and at school I had become accustomed to the phrases "before the war" and "when the war's over". "Before the war", apparently, things had been better, though I was too young to understand why, except that there had been no bombs then, and people had eaten things like ice -cream and bananas, which I had only heard of . When the war was over we would go back to London, but this meant little to me. I did not remember what London was like.

What I remember now about VE (Victory in Europe) Day was the May evening. After dinner I said I wanted to see the bonfire (大火堆) , so when it got dark my father took me to the end of the street. The bonfire was very high, and somehow people had collected some old clothes to dress the un- mistakable figure with the moustache (胡子) they had to put on top of it. Just as we arrived, they set light to it. The flames rose and soon swallowed the "guy". Everyone was cheering and shouting, and an old woman came out of her house with two chairs and threw them on the fire to keep it going.

I stood beside my father until the fire started to go down, not knowing what to say. He said nothing, either. He had fought in the First World War and may have been remembering the end of that. At last he said, "Well, that's it, son. Let's hope that this time it really will be the last one."

40. Where did the author live before the Second World War?

A. In London.

B. In a small town.

C. In Europe.

D. In the countryside.
