Clint was playing a game with a girl. I sat in the corner watching him. I didn't feel that I had whatever it took to get up and mix with others because of my self-esteem problem. Finally I got up the courage to order a drink for him. When he got it, he gave me the most dazzling smile. We spent the rest of the evening talking until I realized that it was almost morning. I figured that he was simply being nice to me because I had bought him a drink, but the very next day he called and told me that he could not stop thinking about me and that he wanted to meet my kids too.
(81) About 3 months later, my divorce was final and Clint sat my boys down and asked them if it was all right with them if he asked me to marry him because he could not imagine life without the three of us anymore. I was so touched that he went to my boys and asked for their approval because they were the "men of the house" at the ripe old ages of 2 and 4. They said yes and we have all been together ever since. Clint gave me and my boys a second chance at a wonderful life. (82) Not a day goes by that he doesn't tell we are the best thing that ever has happened to him and that he loves us.
The writer's first marriage was unsuccessful because______ .

Last night after dinner I told my family the bad news. 1 had this class assignment to monitor our use of energy at home for a week. Our family got an F.
Tuesday night my brother watched the same two hour movie on his TV set that we were watching in the living room. Thursday Mom ran an entire dishwashing cycle for 3cupa, 2plates, a knife and 3 little spoons. That's lot of electricity and hot water down the drain.
Dad drives 28 miles back and forth to work alone. Two men he works with live right nearly, and they could carpool(合伙使用汽车) and save about a thousand gallons of gas a year. And me, I'm guilty too. I went out and left the radio blaring in my room all Saturday morning.
So last night at the dinner table we all agreed to do everything we could to conserve energy. Faster showers. Lower thermostats(温度调节器) . Fuller care (51) It's a fact that this country's using up energy faster than we produce it. I read that we may run out of oil-forever-in thirty years. So terrible. (52) Unless every person in every house on every block does his part, the future looks pretty dim.
I'm getting more and more concerned about the future. Because that's where I'm going to be.
The people in this family______.
A.wasted energy unconsciously
B.had the radio on when they went out
C.watched TV programs separately
D.liked to use hot water while washing dishes

I have never understood this. My dream life does not seem as important as my waking life only because there is far less of it, but to me it is important. As if there were at least two extra continents added to the world, and lightning excursions running to them at any moment between midnight and breakfast. Then again, the dream life, though queer and confusing and unsatisfactory in many respects, has its own advantages. The dead are there, smiling and talking. The past is there, some-times all broken and confused but occasionally as fresh as a daisy. And perhaps, the future is there too, waving at us. This dream life is often overshadowed by huge mysterious anxieties, with luggage that cannot be packed and trains that refuse to be caught; and both persons and scenes there are not as dependable and solid as they are in waking life, so that Brown and Smith merge into one person while Robinson splits into two, and there are thick woods outside the bathroom door and the dining-room is somehow part of a theater balcony; and there are moments of sorrow or terror in the dream world that are worse than anything else we have known under the sun. Yet this other life has its interests, its enjoyments, its satisfactions, and, at certain rare intervals, a peaceful glow or a sudden excitement, like glimpses of another form. of existence altogether, that we cannot match with open eyes.
As for dreams, we can conclude that
A.when the author has wonderful dreams, he will be happy for the whole day.
B.if the author had too much terrible dreams, he would feel annoyed.
C.the author wishes that he could make no fuss about any holiday.
D.the author wishes that he could have more strange dreams.

Summers with father were always enjoyable. Swimming, hiking, boating, fishing the days were not long enough to contain all of our activities. There never seemed to be enough time to go to church, which disturbed some friends and relations. Accused of neglecting this part of our education, my father instituted a summer school for my brother and me. However, his summer course included ancient history, which Papa felt our schools neglected, and navigation, in which we first had a formal examination in the dining room, part of which consisted of tying several knots in a given time limit. Then we were each separately sent on what was grandly referred to as a cruise in my father's 18 foot knockabout, spending the night on board, and loaded down, according to my mother, with enough food for a week. I remember that on my cruise I was required to formally plot our course, using the tide table, even though our goal was an island I could see quite clearly across the water in the distance.
What was the original reason for holding the summer school?
A.The father wanted the children to learn more about religion.
B.The children got poor grades in their regular school.
C.The regular school teachers neglected the children.
D.Friends and relatives thought the children should learn religion.

第11题
Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystalclear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people's observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers, and books, which some might honour with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one the outstanding and essential qualities required is se]f-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist requires not only self-discipline but hard training, determination and a goal. A scientist, up to a point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.
The first paragraph tells us the author ______. ()
A.was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood
B.lost his hearing when he was a child
C.didn't like his brothers and sisters
D.was born to a naturalist's family
