I don't know why UFOs are never sighted over large cities by hordes of people. But it is consistent with the idea that there are no space vehicles from elsewhere in our skies. I suppose it is also consistent with the ideas that space vehicles from elsewhere avoid large cities. However, the primary argument against recent extraterrestrial visitation is the absence of evidence.

Take leprechauns. Suppose there are frequent reports of leprechauns. Because I myself am emotionally predisposed in favor of leprechauns, I would want to check the evidence especially carefully. Suppose I find that 500 picnickers independently saw a green blur in the forest. Terrific. But so what? This is evidence only for a green blur. Maybe it was a fast hummingbird. Such cases are reliable but not particularly interesting.

Now suppose that someone reports: "I was walking through the forest and came upon a convention of 7000 leprechauns. We talked for a while and I was taken down into their hole in the ground and shown pots of gold and feathered green hats. "I will reply: "Fabulous! Who else went along?" And he will say, "Nobody", or "My fishing partner". This is a case that is interesting but unreliable. In a case of such importance, the uncorroborated testimony of one or two people is almost worthless. What I want is for the 500 picnickers to come upon the 7000 leprechauns.., or vice versa.

The situation is the same with UFOs. The reliable cases are uninteresting and the interesting cases are unreliable. Unfortunately, there are no cases that are both reliable and interesting.

What's the author's attitude towards the UFOs?

A.The author is not sure whether they are true or not.

B.The author doubts if they are true.

C.The author doesn't think they are interesting.

D.The author simply does not believe them.

The Lakers' forward Kobe Bryant has scored 50 or more points in four straight games, secon
d in the NBA only to Wilt Chamberlain's seven. He also now is tied with Michael Jordan for second with four behind Chamberlain's 32 in most 60-point games.

"He's doing something I've never seen", Lakers coach Phil Jackson said in an e-mail Saturday. "This has been historic". He should know because he coached Jordan and played against Chamberlain. Bryant is not going to win the MVP award, which likely will go to Dirk Nowitzki or Steve Nash. But his scoring brilliance again seems to answer the question of who's the best player in the league and it also provides more evidence in the similarity of Bryant and Jordan in their talent and approach to the game.

In any ease, Bryant is the player now firmly holding that mythical torch of greatness, sporting celebrity and creativity that Jordan once took from Julius "Dr. J" Erring. "Kobe has the verdant green light to hoist it up until he cools down", Jackson said. "Wonders never cease in this game". Certainly, Bryant has been wonderful in the four games, averaging 56.3 points with two games of at least 60. Moreover, he hardly has been selfish or working outside the offense because most of his field goals have come on long jumpers, including 17 of 33 on three-pointers. Bryant is shooting 54 percent.

"It's phenomenal. It's incredible", Jackson told Los Angeles reporters. "He's shooting [outside] more than Michael was. Michael was probably doing more post-up, more penetration, more at-the-basket kind of stuff. But Kobe's doing a whole range of things. I think his shooting has just been remarkable, the way he is raising up over people and knocking the ball down".

It's still a long way off, but because he started in the NBA when he was 18, Bryant, 28, can pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the league's all-time scorer if he can stay healthy and average 25 points until he is 38. "The best part of it all is that we're winning", Bryant said. "The second is that this generation of players who might not have ever heard of the Elgin [Baylors] or Wilts [and their] greatness will now take notice so the legacy of their brilliance will live on.

"As far as myself, I can't explain it. All is in slow motion all the time. I don't know why or how, but it's trippy". That's probably what Chamberlain said during his record run.

Which of the following statements is true according to the author?

A.Kobe Bryant is the second in the NBA for what he got 50 or more points in four games.

B.Wilt Chamberlain used to get 60 or more points in seven straight games, first in the NBA.

C.Michael Jordan is in the third place with four behind Chamberlain's 32 in most 60-point games.

D.Michael Jordan is equal to Kobe Bryant in most 60-point games.

This book is written expressly for students in an attempt to present the material that is
most useful and interesting to them. Previous courses in chemistry are not necessary for the understanding of the material, although those students who have had high school chemistry will find that a review of the inorganic section will better enable them to master the organic and biochemistry sections that follow.

The author has felt that in the past there was an improper selection of material from inorganic, organic, and biochemistry in the majority of the textbooks of chemistry for nurse. The tendency has been to develop the inorganic chemistry to such an extent that organic and biochemistry is covered too briefly. The recent advances in biochemistry and their widespread application to the practice of medicine and nursing have considerably altered the situation. Not only is biochemistry more closely allied to the practical chemistry of medicine and nursing but also it is of more interest to the student. In the author's experience the response to biochemistry has always been more favorable than to the other sections. Within the brief period allotted to chemistry, therefore, the sections on inorganic, organic, and biochemistry should be so arranged that a good share of the time is spent in the study of biochemistry. This book presents mainly those fundamentals of inorganic and organic chemistry that are necessary for the understanding of the section on biochemistry.

The fundamental points suggested in the Curriculum Guide are included in the book, with some additions in the biochemistry section. The author feels that a study of urine, vitamins, nutrition, and hormones is so obviously a part of biochemistry that at least the fundamentals should be included in this course.

The book has been planned in such a way that it may be adapted to various courses in chemistry. The material suggested by the Curriculum Guide is covered in the first nineteen chapters and may be used in accelerated courses or where minimum time is allotted to chemistry. When the time allotted to the course is sixty to ninety hours, the entire contents of the book may be used to advantage. While the book has been written especially to fit the needs of Schools of Nursing, it could readily be applied in instances where students are required to take but one course in chemistry.

The apathetic attitude of nonprofessional students toward a course in inorganic chemistry may well be overcome by the proper presentation of material selected from inorganic, organic, and biochemistry.

Which of the following is TRUE about reading the book?

A.One must first review his high school courses.

B.Previous courses in chemistry are necessary.

C.A good mastery of biochemistry is essential.

D.One needn't have studied chemistry before.

Electronic books could revolutionize reading, but people ought to consider their far-reach
ing impacts as well. "The e-book promises to wreak a slow havoc (浩劫) on life as we know it," Jason Ohler, professor of technology assessment (评估), university of Alaska Southeast In Juneau, warned the World Future Society, Bethesda, Md. His assessment weighed the pros and cons (赞成和反对的理由) of e-book technology's impact on social relationships, the environment, the economy, etc. Before you curl up (蜷曲) with an e-book, consider the disadvantages.

They increase eyestrain due to poor screen resolution, replace a relatively cheap commodity with a more expensive one, and displace workers in print book production and traditional publishing. E-books make it easy to share data, thereby threatening copyright agreements and reducing compensation of authors, as well as creating nonbiodegradable (不可生物降解的) trash.

On the other hand, e-books save paper and trees, reduce the burden of the carrying and storing of printed books, promote self-sufficiency in learning, and make reading a collaborative experience online. They also create new jobs for writers and artists and encourage self-publishing.

In final analysis, Ohler points out, e-books should gain society's approval if a few conditions are met: make them biodegradable and recyclable, solve the problem of eye fatigue (疲劳), be sure the "have-nots" get the technology, and support e-book training in schools and business.

What is the author's purpose of writing the passage?

A.Draw people's attention to the disadvantages of e-books.

B.Call on people to reject e-books.

C.Criticize schools and business that don't provide e-books.

D.Encourage people to use e-books.
