Basketball is a sport enjoyed by millions of fans in at least 100 countries. It's one of t
he best-known sports in the world. It all began in 1891.

Dr. James A. Naismith, the father of basketball, was an instructor at a YMCA(基督教) Training school. The school trained people to work in YMCAs. Officials at the school were concerned about the low attendance during the winter months. They felt that people didn't attend then because the school did not have a good winter sports program. So they asked Dr. Naismith for help. He came up with a new indoor game.

Naismith studied current games. He found that all the most popular games used a ball. So a ball would be a part of his new game, he decided. But kicking the ball or hitting it would be too rough for indoor. So he put 2 peach baskets up on poles. The players had to try to throw a soccer ball into them. Naismith then made thirteen rules for the game. 12 of them are still in use today. Just 7 years after the game began, professional basketball teams were formed.

And that's how basketball was born.

Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.The Birth of Basketball

B.YMCA and Basketball

C.Basketball——an Indoor Game

D.A Winter Sports Program

Among the many ways in which people communicate through speech, public speaking has probab
ly received more study and attracted more attention than any other. Politicians campaigning for public office, salespeople presenting products, and preachers delivering sermons all depend upon this form. of public communication. Even people who do not make speaking a part of their daily work are often asked to make public speeches: students at graduation, for instance, or members of churches, clubs, or other organizations. Nearly everyone speaks in public at some time or other, and those who perform. the task well often become leaders.

There are many reasons for speaking in public. A public speaker may hope to teach an audience about new ideas, for example, or provide information-about some topic. Creating a good feeling or entertaining an audience may be another purpose. Public speakers, however, most often seek to persuade an audience to adopt new opinions, to take certain actions, or to see the world in a new way.

Public speakers usually know well in advance when they are scheduled to make an address. Consequently, they are able to prepare their message before they deliver it. Sometimes, though, speakers must deliver the message unprepared, or off the cuff, such as when they are asked to offer a toast at a wedding reception or to participate in a televised debate or interview.

When they do not have to speak unprepared, most speakers write their own speeches. Politicians and business executives sometimes employ professional writers who prepare their speeches for them. These professional writers may work alone or in small teams. Although the speaker may have some input into the contents of the speech, the writers sometimes have a great influence over the opinions expressed by their employers. Regardless of how a speech is prepared, the person who delivers it is given credit for its effect upon its hearers.

Public speaking is well known to the average people because______.

A.most of them have been trained as public speakers

B.such activities are prevalent in the society

C.most of them have to do it when they study at college

D.the passage does not mention the reason

Most worthwhile careers require some kind of specialized training. Ideally, therefore, the choice of an【1】should be made even before the choice of a curriculum in high school. Actually,【2】, most people make several job choices during their working lives,【3】because of economic and industrial changes and partly to improve【4】position. The "one perfect job" does not exist. Young people should【5】enter into a broad flexible training program that will【6】them for a field of work rather than for a single【7】.

Unfortunately many young people have to make career plans【8】benefit of help from a competent vocational counselor or psychologist. Knowing【9】about the occupational world, or themselves for that matter, they choose their lifework on a hit-or-miss【10】.Some drift from job to job. Others【11】to work in which they are unhappy and for which they are not fitted.

One common mistake is choosing an occupation for【12】real or imagined prestige. Too many high school students-or their parents for them-choose the professional field,【13】both the relatively small proportion of workers in the professions and the extremely high educational and personal【14】. The imagined or real prestige of a profession or a "white collar" job is【15】good reason for choosing it as life's work.【16】, these occupations are not always well paid. Since a large proportion of jobs are in mechanical and manual work, the【17】of young people should give serious【18】to these fields.

Before making an occupational choice, a person should have a general idea of what he wants【19】life and how hard he is willing to work to get it. Some people desire social prestige, others intellectual satisfaction. Some want security, others are willing to take【20】for financial gain. Each occupational choice has its demands as well as its rewards.

The old idea that child prodigies(神童)"burn themselves" or "overtax their brains" in the early years, therefore, are prey to failure and (at worst)mental illness is just a myth. As a matter of fact, the outstanding thing that happens to bright children is that they are very likely to grow into bright adults.

To find this out, 1,500 gifted persons were followed up to their thirty-fifth year with these results.

On adult intelligence tests, they scored as high as they did as children. They were, as a group, in good health, physically and mentally. Eighty-four percent of their group were married and seemed content with their life.

About 70 percent had graduated from colleges, though only 30 percent had graduated with honors. A few had even flunked out (退学), but nearly half of these had returned to graduate.

Of the men, 80 percent were in one of the professions or in business, managers or semi- professional jobs. The women who had remained single had offices, business, or professional occupations.

The group had published 90 books and 1,500 articles in scientific, scholarly, and literary magazines and had collected more than 100 patents(专利权).

In a material .way they didn't do badly either. Average income was considerably higher among the gifted people, especially the men, than for the country as a whole, despite their comparative youth when last surveyed.

In fact, far from being strange, maladjusted(难以适应)people locked in an ivory tower, most of the gifted were turning their early promises into practical reality.

The main idea of the passage is ______.

A.how many gifted children turned successful when they grew up.

B.that bright children were unlikely to physically and mentally healthy.

C.that gifted children were most likely to become bright grown-ups.

D.that when the bright children grew up, they would become ordinary.

There is virtually no limit to how one can serve community interests, from spending a few
hours a week with some charitable organization to practically full-time work for a social agency. Just as there are opportunities for voluntary service【1】(VSO) for young people before they take up full-time employment,【2】there are opportunities for overseas service for【3】technicians in developing countries. Some people,【4】those who retire early,【5】their technical and business skills in countries【6】there is a special need.

So in considering voluntary or【7】community service, there are more opportunities than there【8】were when one first began work. Most voluntary organizations have only a small full-time【9】and depend very much on volunteers and part-timers. This means that working relationships are different from those in commercial organizations, and values may be different.【10】some ways they may seem more casual and less efficient, but one should not【11】them by commercial criteria. The people who work with them do so for different reasons and with different【12】, both personal and【13】. One should not join them【14】to arm them with professional experience; they must be joined with commitment to the【15】, not business efficiency. Because salaries are【16】or non-existent many voluntary bodies offer modest expense. But many retired people take part in community service for【17】, simply because they enjoy the work.

Many community activities possible【18】retirement were also possible during one's working life but they are to be undertaken【19】seriously for that. Retired people who are just looking for something different or unusual to do should not consider【20】community service.

第9题

Culture is the sum total of all the traditions, customs, beliefs, and ways of life of a gi
ven group of human beings. In this sense, every group has a culture, however savage, undeveloped, or uncivilized it may seem to us.

To the professional anthropologist, there is no intrinsic superiority of one culture over another, just as to the professional linguist there is no intrinsic hierarchy among languages.

People once thought of the languages of backward group as savage, undeveloped forms of speech, consisting largely of grunts and groans. While it is possible that languages in general began as a series of grunts and groans. It is a fact established by the study of "backward" languages that no spoken tongue answers that description today. Most languages of uncivilized groups are, by our most severe standards, extremely complex, delicate, and ingenious pieces of machinery for the transfer of ideas. They fall behind our Western languages not in their sound patterns or grammatical structures, which usually are fully adequate for all language needs, but only in their vocabularies, which reflect the objects and activities known to their speakers. Even in this department, however, two things are to be noted: 1. All languages seem to possess the machinery for vocabulary expansion, whether by putting together words already in existence or by borrowing them from other languages and adapting them to their own systems. 2. The objects and activities requiring names and distinctions for "backward" languages, while different from ours, are often surprisingly numerous and complicated. A Western language distinguishes between what is close to the speaker, or to the person addressed, or removed from both, or out of sight, or in the past, or in the future.

This study of language, in turn, casts a new light upon the claim of the anthropologists that all cultures are to be viewed independently, and without ideas of rank or hierarchy.

The statement that "every group has a culture" grows out of the author's ______.

A.definition of culture

B.feeling about human beings

C.bias in regard to civilized humans

D.philosophy
