Are you a good reader? Good readers know that reading isn't just about knowing words— it's a way of thinking. Here are some tips that may be of some help.

Think before you read. Before you read the text, ask yourself the questions that why you are reading it and what you want to get from it. These will help you choose what words you need to know and what words you can skip or scan.

Think while you are reading. Can you get the meaning of the text without looking up new words in a dictionary? A text will often give examples that may help you understand some words. For example: Many large Russian cities, such as Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk, have taken steps to protect their culture. Passage One

Artificial flowers are used for scientific as well as for decorative purposes. They are made from a variety of materials, such as wax and glass, so skillfully that they can scarcely be distinguished from natural flowers. In making such models, painstaking skill and artistry are called for, as well as thorough knowledge of plant structure. The collection of glass flowers in the Botanical Museum of Harvard University is the most famous in North America and is widely known throughout the scientific world. In all, there are several thousand models in colored glass, the work of two artists-naturalists, Leopold Blaschka and his son Rudolph.

The intention was to have the collection represent at least one member of each flower family native to the United States. Although it was never completed, it contains more than seven hundred species representing 164 families of flowering plants, a group of fruits showing the effect of fungus diseases, and thousands of flower parts and magnified details. Every detail of these is accurately reproduced in color and structure. The models ate kept in locked cases, as they are too valuable and fragile for classroom use.

31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. An Extensive Collection of Glass Flowers.

B. The Live Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka.

C. Flowers Native to the United States.

D. Materials Used for Artificial Flowers.

Passage Five

In order to learn a foreign language well, it is necessary to overcome the fear of making mistakes. If the primary goal (目标) of language use is communication (交际), then mistakes are secondary considerations that may be dealt with gradually. On the other hand, students should not ignore their mistakes. The language learner may observe how native speakers express themselves, and how native expressions differ from the way the learner might say them. For example, a Spanish speaker who has been saying "I do it" to express willingness to do something in the immediate future, could, by communicating with native speakers of English, observe that native speakers actually say "I'll do it". The result can serve as a basis for the student to change his way of using the present tense in English. But a student who is unwilling to communicate in the first place would lose this opportunity to learn by trial and error.

52. According to the passage, the present tense in English is ______.

A. not used to express one's readiness to do something in the immediate future

B. used with some verbs but not with others to express future intention

C. basically the same in English as it is in Spanish

D. not the most difficult problem for foreign students

Passage Five

On a Saturday night, Mr. Jones went to Willington and got so drunk at the Red Lion that he did not come back till midday on Sunday. His four men had milked the cows in the early morning and then had gone out hunting, without bothering (麻烦) to feed the animals.

This was more than the hungry animals would bear. Together, they jumped upon their masters. Mr. Jones and his men suddenly found themselves being struck with their horns and kicked from all sides. The situation was quite out of their control. A minute later all five of them were in full fright down the road, with the animals running after them joyfully.
