The author is an aggressive, brilliant and literate astronomer. This vastly entertaining b
ook has a simple manner with complex ideas, without being patronizing, and is often very funny.

In 274 pages Sagan deals with everything from the formation of the Earth to the puzzling possibilities of contact with extra-terrestrial life. This is the moment in history when man's stepping into the universe has suddenly become conceivable. To Sagan this is more exciting and important than was the exploration of the New World in the sixteenth century. So expenditure on the space programme, pruned of recent excesses, ought to continue--it is, according to Sagan, no larger a part of America's gross national income than was the relative cost to England in the sixteenth century of exploration in sailing ships.

The book is not for scientific illiterates, nor is Sagan a pedestrian scientist. Although he makes short work of the unidentified foreign objects (UFO) spotters, he is unafraid to take us on a speculative journey to a black hole which, for all he knows, might be the quick route to somewhere else, not necessarily our universe.

Sagan exhibits a passionate interest in life in the cosmos in which there are .almost certainly civilizations much more advanced than our own. We are the result of a number of relatively recent cosmic accidents, but for all that, Sagan is no less excited about our future,

From the passage we understand that Carl Sagan writes ______.

A.forcefully and complexly

B.elaborately and literally

C.simply and humorously

D.snobbishly and cleverly

Passage Two

The other day I heard an American say to a Chinese student of English "You speak very good English." But the student answered, "No, no. My English is very poor." The foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made himself understood or the student had not heard him clearly, he said, "Yes indeed, you speak English very well." But the Chinese student still kept saying "No". In the end the foreigner gave up and was at a loss what to say. What's wrong with the student's answer? It is because he did not accept a compliment(赞美的话)as the English people do. He should have said "Thank you" instead of "No". He actually understood what the American had said. But he thought he should be modest. If he said "Thank you", that would mean he was too proud. According to the western culture, if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say "Thank you". If someone says to a Woman "You look so beautiful with the new clothes on", she should be very happy and answer "Thank you". In our country we think being modest is a virtue and showing off a bad thing. But in the west, if you are modest and say "No, I'm afraid I can't do it well", then the others will take it for granted that you really cannot do it. If you often say "No", you will certainly be looked down upon by others. When asking for a job, if one says something like "Let me have a try on the job" instead of "Yes, I can certainly do it," he or she will never expect to get it. So in the west one should always be confident. Without self-confidence, he cannot go anywhere. Confidence is of great importance to one in a country where competition is quite keen.

40. Why was the American surprised at the Chinese student's answer?

A. Because he wondered whether the student could really speak good English.

B. Because he could hardly hear what the student had said.

C. Because he wouldn't like others to say "No".

D. Because the way to accept a compliment in China is not the same as that in the western countries.

听力原文:W: So what are the two main times of the day that you watch TV?

M: Well, a little around breakfast time and then it tends to be really late— eleven or even midnight—when I've finished work.

W: And what sort of programs do you go for?

M: Some news bulletins but I also really like to put my feet up with some of the old comedy shows.

W: Fine. And turning to the new channel...which type of programs would you like to see more of?

M: Well, I certainly don't think we need any more factual programs like news and documentaries. I think we need more about things like local in formation...you know, providing a service for the community. And in the same vein, perhaps more for younger viewers...you know, good quality stuff.

W: Ah ha. And if you had to give the new directors some specific advice when they set up the channel, what advice would you give theme

M: I think I'd advice them to pay more attention to the quality of the actual broadcast, you know, the sound system. They ought to do lots more of these kinds of interview, you know, talking with their potential customers.

W: Oh, I'm glad you think it's valuable!

M: Certainly...yeah.

W: Good. Ok, this will be a commercial channel of course, but how often do you think it is tolerable to have adverts?

M: Well out of that list I'd say every quarter of an hour. I don't think we can complain about that, as long as they don't last for ten minutes each time!

W: Quite. And…would you be willing to attend any of our special promotions for the new channel?

M: Yes, I'd be very happy to, as long as they're held here in my area.

W: Thank you very much for your time.
